04.02.2013, 18:54
разучивание песни о Земле;
беседы о Природе;
There
are a lot of magnificent, amazing things and places on the Earth:
boundless spaces, high mountains, blue-blue seas and what on. There are a
lot of people on our planet each of them is a wonder. To remind the
humans about the beauty of our planet there is a special holiday.
1: Hello, Kate! How are you?
2: Hi, German. I’m fine thanks and you?
1: Not too bad, thanks.
2: What is it on your shirt?
1: Oh, this is a symbol of our planet. You really don’t
know, do you? It’s a symbol of our planet. Soon, we are celebrating
Earth Day?
2: Oh, really. I see, but I’ve never heard of it. What is special about this day? Why do we need it?
1: You are lucky. I’ll explain it to you. One of my
friends has taken part in the scientific conference at school and she
has sent me a file with her performance. Let’s have a look at it.

April 22 is a special day around the world.
On that day inhabitants of the Earth celebrate Earth Day.
Earth Day is a time when many people show that they care for our fragile planet.
They show concern about the threats the planet faces–destruction of the
rain, forest, and holes in the ozone layer, the greenhouse effect, too
much garbage and all forms of air and water pollution.
It is the day for people to learn what they can do to preserve the planet Earth.
The first Earth Day was held in the USA thirty three years ago, in
April 1970. At that time, Americans were just beginning to learn
about the problem facing the planet.
We celebrate Earth Day every year. We are discussing many important problems connected with this very day.
We are speaking about the environment of our native city; we are
planting trees and looking for urgent and necessary measures which
should be undertaken to protect our Earth
Now, have a look at the statistics
1970 – over 20 mln joined the action to plant trees
1982 – declared an official holiday
1990 – the holiday became international
1992 - Russia joined the idea to celebrate Earth Day
1: Are you going to join people who love our planet? We are waiting for your help! The Earth needs your assistance.
2: The presentation is excellent. Now I know a lot
about this day, but still, I don’t quite understand why this day was
first celebrated in April and who was the first person or group of
people who started to pay much attention to the problems of the Earth.
1: A good question. I’ve never thought about it, but I have one more friend who will be able to help us. One moment, please.

1: Hello, Svyatoslav. Where are you?
Hello, German. I’m in Nebraska. I was sent to find out the information about the international holiday, Earth Day.
1: Great. We’re just discussing this holiday. By the way, this is my friend, Kate.
Hello, Kate. Nice to meet you.
2: Hi, Nice to meet you too.
1: Why have you been sent to Nebraska, I wonder?
The history of this holiday is connected with the name of
one of the citizens of Nebraska John Morton. At the end of the 19th
century he suggested organizing a day devoted to planting of trees and
shrubs. This day was called Arbor Day.
1: I see, but why is this day celebrated on the 22d of April?
The answer is very simple. It’s the birthday of John Morton.
2: Oh, really, but why do we say Earth Day instead of Arbor Day? What’s the difference between these two days?
You know, it’s the same holiday. The only reason why it
was called Earth Day was that in 1970 more than 20 million people from
141 countries took part in its celebration.
1: Thank you very much. One more question. When did Russian people join the celebration of this day?
Since 1992.
1: Thank you very much. I wish you good luck in your project. See you in Moscow. Bye.
Bye.

2 Oh, it’s quite clear now why Moscow Rerich Museum has
become so popular recently. A unique bell attracts the attention of
Nature lovers.
1 Yes, you are right. Have you ever been to this museum?
2 Unfortunately, not, but our school Nature club "The
Green from Chelobityevo" has been there. Let’s have a virtual excursion
together.

2 Great! Now I know a lot about this holiday. The Earth Day really makes people think more about Nature.
1 So, to finish with, I’d like to introduce you my
teacher of English Natalia Sergeevna. She’s been an active ecotourist
for years.
2 Ecotourist? What’s that? You are surprising me every
minute! I love travelling but unfortunately, I know nothing about
ecotourism.
1 Well, then – listen & remember.
'Ecotourism' (also known as ecological tourism) is responsible travel
to fragile, pristine areas which conserves the environment. A walk
through the rainforest is not eco-tourism unless that particular walk
somehow benefits that environment and the people who live there. As for
me, I like the idea of ecotourism because it includes programs that
minimize the negative aspects of conventional tourism on the
environment. By the way the main part of ecotourism is the promotion of
recycling, energy efficiency, water conservation and creation of
economic opportunities for the local communities. Now, I’m in Australia,
Tourism is a major economic activity here. The government pays special
attention to the developing of the ecotourism. I’m visiting the Great
Barrier Reef, the largest coral reef system in the world, with over 3000
individual coral reefs and 900 separate islands located within the
Great Barrier Reef. People from all over the world come here to explore
the thousand year old living coral reef, and see many different
biological species and types of vegetation.
2 Good idea! I’m ready to join ecotourism. I’m sure the
Earth Day will be celebrated at my school too. Moreover, I have a great
wish to organize a club of Nature Lovers.
1 Oh,membership is growing.
And you? Ready to join us? Welcome to our Nature lovers club too!
